I wish I could tell you this common problem had an easy solution, but all too often it doesn’t. That said, consider these basic tips before you call your Internet service provider to sound off.
Restart your modem
Sometimes this simple step is all it takes. Leave the modem off for at least 10 seconds, then turn it back on and wait for the modem’s lights to indicate an Internet connection.
Restart your router
Simple step number two. Follow the instructions provided above.
While you’re at it, take a good look at the cable connections in both devices. Make sure those connections are secure.
Stop using bandwidth hogs for a little while
If you expect to get full speed out of your connection while downloading multiple movies and streaming TV shows at the same time, you might want to readjust your expectations.
Take time away from the Internet
For some people, a slow or nonexistent connection can be a blessing. Sometimes it’s just what you need to help you focus on work that doesn’t require you to do anything online.

There are MANY more steps you can take, and this article disingenuously crams several steps into each one. It even links to other lists to help you dive into items. That said, if the simpler steps listed above don’t help, you may need to do this work.
I like this article, especially since it puts “calling your ISP” and “finding another provider” towards the end of the list. In doing so, it promotes a do-it-yourself attitude, something I recommend everybody adopt.
