Create a LinkedIn custom URL

A URL (uniform resource locator) is the address of a web site. For instance, you can find the Google search engine at the URL www.google.com.

To make it easier for people to find your LinkedIn profile, you can change the URL they would need to type. For instance, rather than having to type www.linkedin.com/bunchofgobbledygook to find my LinkedIn profile,  people can instead type http://www.linkedin.com/in/luigibenetton, which is much easier to remember.

Change your LinkedIn URL

To change your LinkedIn URL, follow the steps in the LinkedIn topic Customizing Your Public Profile URL (reproduced below).

  1. Sign in to LinkedIn.
  2. In the top right corner of the window, hover the mouse pointer over your name.
  3. Go to Settings and click “Edit your public profile”.
  4. In the “Your public profile URL” box on the right, click the “Customize your public profile URL” link.
  5. Type the last part of your new custom URL in the text box.
  6. Click Set Custom URL.

Use your LinkedIn URL

A LinkedIn profile is a great promotional tool, and a custom profile URL for it will help you spread it around.

The first thing you need to do with your custom URL is to put it in your email signature, even if you have a website of your own and its URL is in your signature already.

You can also put that URL in other places like business cards and blog posts. LinkedIn outlines other ways to promote your profile in its help page Promoting Your Public Profile.
