Making information understandable

As a technical writer, journalist and copywriter, it matters to me that other people can quickly and easily understand what I write. That means I both:

  • write as clearly as I can.
  • structure my information so that readers can easily find the information they need.

This drive results in my doing things like teaching people how to use software, writing about the benefits of specific technologies and offering a tip a week for readers of this blog.

Thomas Goetz, an editor at Wired Magazine, did a fine job applying this philosophy to medical records. His theory: make information understandable for the people who need it. And if you’re wondering why Wired Magazine redid medical records, check out an issue some time. The magazine is second to none when it comes to understandably presenting complex information.
